Motherhood Monday ~ Things Not to Say to a Pregnant Woman

As you can see, I am trying to get back into the swing of things on this little blog of mine and get back to posting 3 times a week. This post was originally written for April 20th but that is the morning I went into labor so it never got posted. I didn't want the post to go to waste so here are a few things not to say to a pregnant woman:

You can google and find endless lists of things not to say to pregnant woman but the truth is someone is going to say something that is still going to offend you...even if its just a little. Here are a few I have I heard:

1 - How many do you have in there?! - I have one, yes one and I know I am HUGE! I don't need you to point it out for me.

2 - You look miserable. - Awe, thank you! You're so sweet! I know I look tired, again, you don't need to point that out.

3 - How much weight have you put on? - Jesus, are you eff-ing kidding me with that question?!?

I know I look different then my normal size 4/6 self, you don't need to point that out to me. I also know I look like I have beach ball under shirt, you SO don't need to point that out to me too. And I'm not sure what is worse, when these comments come from people you know or complete strangers.

The truth is, is that everyone looks different and everyone's pregnancy is going to look and be different. Just google 35 weeks pregnant and see all the different sizes women can be.

Mommy Monday ~ Something New

You may have noticed my lack of posts and MIA status from the blog the past two weeks. Well I have good reason, my little bundle of joy decided to arrive a full 5 weeks early!

I went into labor in the early hours of Monday, April 20th and within 24 hours my little girl was in my arms. Since she was 5 weeks early we only spent a little time together before the nurses took her to the NICU. After a week in the NICU where she learned to eat, regulate her temperature and get some treatment for jaundice she was able to join us at home. Being home for two nights without her was pretty emotional and something I may blog about later (I know other moms and families have it much worse and we hope all those little ones make it home soon!).

I am going to take a break from the blog for a while and spend time with my sweet angel.

In the meantime I hope you are out there having amazing adventures whether it be at home or in a new destination. I am home loving my new adventure into motherhood.

Maternity Monday ~ Week 34

We have less than 6 weeks to go! Countdown is on!!!

Total weight gain: Creeping up to 40 pounds!
Stretch marks? Still don’t have any - Loving Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Oil (now using my travel size I bought for our vacation) by Mama Mio and Basq Advanced Stretch Mark Butter (now on my third tub).
Sleep: Some nights its good, some nights its bad
Miss Anything? Being able to put on my own socks. Yep, the belly is starting to get that big!
Movement: Seems like she is moving more and more. Maybe it's because she is getting bigger and I feel every little movement now.
Food cravings/aversions: Same as the last update
Anything making you queasy or sick? Same as before
Labor Signs: Nothing that I know of...
Symptoms: My lower legs have started to swell! I try and keep my feet propped up as much as possible. And I am getting "pregnancy" brain real bad! So much so that I made my chalk board sign, took pictures, then realized I missed spelled one of the words...
Belly Button in or out? In
Mood: It's okay, I just slowly move around work and the house.
Looking forward to: Working out again!

Maternity Monday

Long before we were expecting I had an idea to make a photo album of all the things my husband and I did before we had a baby. That way our child can look back and see all the fun adventures we had and hopefully inspire them to have their own adventures one day.

I titled this album Before You Were Born. So far it's about 56 pages and it has us graduating college, when and where we met, our engagement and wedding pictures, pictures of our fur babies and of course pictures from our travels. I am also including the weekly update pictures, ultrasounds and the baby shower.

Even though I love to scrapbook, it is so time consuming and I have decided to use companies like Shutterfly to create any sort of photo albums for now on. Below is a collage of some of the pages in this album.

7 more weeks and counting!!!!

Maternity Monday ~ Week 32

Less than 8 weeks left! We are getting close! And I totally cheated on the chalk board this week and edited it on the computer...probably how I am going to do it here on out :)

Total weight gain: Creeping up to 40 pounds!
Stretch marks? Still don’t have any - Loving Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Oil by Mama Mio and Basq Advanced Stretch Mark Butter (now on my third tub).
Sleep: I am actually having some nights where I'm only waking up once to pee…those nights are nice!
Miss Anything? I miss being able to lay down on my stomach and I miss being able to get on the floor and play with my pups.
Movement: Seems like she is moving more and more. Maybe it's because she is getting bigger and I feel every little movement now.
Food cravings/aversions: Same as the last update
Anything making you queasy or sick? Just when you thing you've entered the home stretch - got sick again on March 21 :(
Labor Signs: Not that I know of. They keep saying, "Oh, you'll know!" But will I? How do I know it's not just gas?
Symptoms: Even though my doctor says I'm pretty low maintenance I have still had pretty much every symptom under the sun: nausea, morning sickness, dry skin, bloody noses (from the dry skin), pregnancy rash (I don’t think it was PUPPPS because it was only there for about 2 weeks), acid reflux, my feet are starting to swell, and a slew of other normal symptoms that the books will tell you you might get.
Belly Button in or out? In
Mood: It's okay, I just slowly move around work and the house.
Looking forward to: Not having to take so many pills - I take 5 per night to combat some of my pregnancy symptoms.

Pinspiration: Baby Shower Edition

Crafting for a baby shower can take some time. My theme was Welcome to the World so there were a lot of maps involved. Here are the crafts we did for mine.

1 – Mod Podge Kleenex boxes for the flowers. Except we didn’t use mod podge, my mom found that using Elmer’s Clear Glue (not gel) in the same way as mod podge (painting it on) worked just as well and it was much cheaper.

2 – We did the same thing for the letters B-A-B-Y that decorated the table

3 – The ‘Welcome’ wreath - I had seen some of these on Pinterest but they were using wrapping paper so we used a map. I think it turned out great! It took my friend all day to make. If you plan on making one of these give yourself plenty of time. I plan to spray it with spray varnish so it will keep longer. Here is the tutorial she used.

4 – Food labels and gift tags - I made these with my Silhouette. This machine is pretty cool. You just design what you want on the Silhouette software and then cut it or draw it. All the pictures and cutouts I purchased from the Silhouette design store.

5 – Banners - probably the easiest out of all the crafts. We just cut out some triangles and used some twine to string them together.

6 – We also spray painted some items, that’s pretty self-explanatory.

Week 29

The baby shower went splendidly but man did it wear me out! I pretty much relaxed and watched Netfilx all day. I'll be blogging about the shower in the coming posts and probably not so much about travel. Today I want to share with you how things are going at Week 29:

Total weight gain: about 30 pounds
Stretch marks? None yet - I have been using Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Oil by Mama Mio (still on first bottle) and Basq Advanced Stretch Mark Butter (on my second tub). I apply the oil after my showers and the butter in the morning and when I feel I need more moisturizer. And it goes ALL OVER the belly, rib cage and love handles!
Sleep: Gonna be honest here - I already feel like I will never get another good nights sleep again. If I'm not waking up to pee I'm waking up because my hips hurt.
Miss Anything? You always want what you can't have - I miss wine, champagne and hot dogs
Movement: She is my little wiggle worm in there! Sometimes her movements make me nauseous
Food cravings/aversions: I'm still not real fond of any sort of meat. I can do chicken but not a lot
Anything making you queasy or sick? I started to wake up and feel nauseous again but I haven't thrown up since January 20th so that's good :)
Labor Signs: Not that I know of. They keep saying, "Oh, you'll know!" But will I? How do I know its not just gas?
Symptoms: I now have a pregnancy rash - yay! Its on my elbows and knees and can be pretty itchy! And acid reflux.
Belly Button in or out? Its still in!
Wedding rings on or off? They have been off since December, my fingers swell pretty easily. They swell on a really hot day or when I work out so I knew they wouldn't be on for long.
Mood: Its okay, I just slowly move around work and the house.
Looking forward to: Having this little munchkin out here with us!

{Week 29!}

Maternity Monday

I am back to work today after having to take 2 sick days last week :( boo! Getting sick while being pregnant is NO fun. I also can't believe that February is almost over and in less than 3 months we'll have a little baby girl :)

Today I wanted to talk about parenting classes. Has anybody taken them? So far we have taken two that are offered at out hospital. Breastfeeding and Prepared Childbirth (and we have Newborn Care next month). Breastfeeding is pretty self-explanatory - expect to see a lot of educational videos where women just pop those suckers out!

Side note, I took this class then saw Fifty Shades...enough nudity for one day that's for sure!

Prepared Childbirth is kind of like what some might call a lamaze class. Although we only spent about 30 mins on "breathing" the rest was informational on what one's options are for birth and what to expect. I wouldn't even call it "breathing" it was mostly how to take your mind off the pain of a contraction. Our goal was to try and ignor the handful of ice we were holding for 60 seconds.

So do I feel more prepared to give birth?! I feel more educated but I don't think anything can truly prepare you for giving birth or prepare you for being a parent.

Each hospital's classes are going to be catered for that hospital so its helpful to take them at your hospital if you can.

Maternity Monday

On Friday I was looking at my baby registries and realized that our little one will be here in less than 100 days! WHOA!!!!

Today I wanted to talk about maternity clothes. When I got pregnant I didn't know what to expect and certainly didn't think I would need to buy maternity clothes at 12 weeks but I did. She seemed to be developing right where I needed to button my pants and so it just wasn't happening. First I just wanted to buy some regular jeans but just a larger size and I did that. But after about a week of wearing jeans that only fit in the waist and baggy everywhere else I knew I had to hit up the maternity story.

The only maternity store near me is Destination Maternity, which has two stores in one. It has Motherhood Maternity on one side and Pea in the Pod on the other. Motherhood is less expensive and regular quality and Pea in the Pod is more expensive, designer style and really good quality. My first stop in there I think I bought 2 pairs of jeans, 2 pairs of leggings, and 5 tops.

Jeans
Target – Don’t buy them from here. I feel like they are made with extra fabric in all the wrong places.
Pea in the Pod – LOVE them! They pretty much take designer jeans and cut the waist off and add the belly band. You still have part of the belt loops and your front pockets. But they are hella expensive.
Motherhood – These have a good cut to them but you have faux front pockets and they seem to sag a bit more than the Pea in the Pod ones. They are WAY more reasonably priced.

I’m sure other places have great jeans but these are the ones I have had experience with.

After talking to the employees in the store they pretty much told me that all the jeans are going to start to sag throughout the day because denim is just a heavy material and its heavier than the belly band. Makes sense.

Tops
Target – Hit or miss. I have 2 tops from them, both bought on sale - one fits great, the other not so much (no, I didn't try them on before I bought them).
Pea in the Pod – Great tops, love the extra length they have. But again, they can be expensive.
Motherhood – Same as above but at much better price!
Old Navy - I bought some tank tops here before we went to Hawaii and I love them, I know I'll be wearing them more once the warm weather sticks around for good.

I love the tops at Destination Maternity, either side is great. They are really long and expand in all the right places for your growing belly.

Maternity Monday

Since I had such a rough start to my pregnancy my family and I was interested to see how this trip would go…would I get sick? Well I am happy to report that I did not! I did get nauseous a few times on those famous Hawaiian roads.

I wasn’t too concerned about the flight although my back did start to hurt when we were flying there. To prepare for the trip I decided to wear some knee high compression socks and not cross my legs (which is a habit of mine). My legs were fine and I didn’t have any swelling. For more tips for traveling while pregnant visit The Bump. You can also read this article about the health effects of flying

Maternity Monday

So you may have noticed that I have been away...because we were in Hawaii!!! And before I start blogging about our adventures I wanted to touch on the topic of getting pat downs by TSA while traveling pregnant. I had to get a total of 4 pat downs during this trip and here is my review of each airport.

Houston (IAH) - Very professional and the lady that patted me down had actually had kids and knew that the waist line on my pants actually comes up above my belly button. Grade: A

Los Angeles (LAX) - Awful! The woman in charge was a real bitch. When I said that I wanted a pat down she said to me, "this isn't an x-ray machine. Its a metal detector." I replied, "I don't care, I want a pat down." What I wanted to say was, "Are you a doctor?!?! NO, so shut the f- - k up!!!" Grade: F

Maui (OGG) - The same thing that happened at LAX happened here and the TSA guy told me that my doctor should have given me a lead belt for traveling on an airport. What made this worse was that there was another woman who wanted a pat down and we both had to wait for what felt like 15 minutes before I hollered at a female TSA agent that we needed pat downs. Grade: F

Kona (KOA) - Kona was professional since pretty much everyone traveling out of there traveled to there and know what they are getting into when asking for a pat down. They made sure that I knew what I was asking for and it wasn't a big deal. Grade: A

P.S. You can check out my Youtube page in the link below to view some of our whale watching video.

Maternity Monday

So I decided that I wanted to blog a little about my pregnancy on this blog...after all, it too is a journey just like traveling.

I'm not sure why I feel the need to share but I think people take comfort in knowing that other people out there had had similar experiences to theirs. So, this is the beginning of our pregnancy story…

I recently listed to an audio copy of American Sniper and I like how Chris Kyle described how he and his wife got pregnant for the first time. It was something along the lines of, "… all we had to do was kiss without protection and we were pregnant."

That is pretty much how it happened for us too.

The summer of 2014 was when we decided to start to try. And like I said above, it didn't take much time at all. 5 days after my missed cycle I took the test (p.s. I also took one 4 days before my expected cycle and the test was negative).

On September 19th I found out I was going to be a mom…whoa!

How was I feeling at this stage, 4 weeks pregnant? I was feeling pretty normal; I had a few symptoms like acne and hunger. Also, if you had laser hair removal all that hair is going to come back in full force! If I had known that I probably would not have done it before kids.

Moving on… Week 7… What was going on with me during week 7? Two words, MORNING SICKNESS! And folks, it isn't pretty. I ended up having to take multiple days off from work, was prescribed some nausea medication, and I was trying all sorts of anti-nausea tricks. I tried everything from ginger ale, to ginger gum, eating whole pieces of ginger, peppermints, you name it. The one thing that has really worked for me was the motion sickness wrist bands that most people use when they go on cruises. Also, another thing that has made me feel better was sleeping on the floor. Yep, that’s right, the floor. I made myself a little cot with workout mats, sleeping bags, blankets and pillows. While on the floor it seemed I was able to keep a consistent temperature, no hot/cold flashes, and I had less nausea. If I could have slept next to the toilet I would have...

Before I was expecting I had high hopes for myself during this time. I wanted to keep working out (previously I had been working out 150 minutes a week) and I wanted to be healthy and eat the right things. Well that all went downhill quick! The few things I could manage to keep down were carbs, at this point I had consumed very little meat and I could manage some apples here and there. And working out…well I haven’t really at all. I take walks when the weather is nice and I have taken a few yoga classes. I am bummed because working out gives you endorphin's and endorphin's make you happy (and happy people don’t shoot their husbands…Legally Blonde anyone?).

So did it get any better after week 7? That’s a big fat NOPE! During week 9 we made a trip to the ER and that’s when I was diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. I could not keep anything down for 48 hours, even water. I'm almost certain that as soon as anything hit my stomach it was coming back up.

We spent about 5-6 hours there while I finished up an IV bag and had some liquid Zofran pumped into me. And once they ran my blood work, urine sample and I could keep down a cup of juice I was released. They gave me some paperwork which stated not to take anything with extra iron in it so my prenatal vitamins needed to change to prescription ones. And the ER doctor told me to take my Zofran medication more frequently. This seemed to help A LOT!

Today we are over half way there and we'll soon be parents. With a little bit of morning sickness still lingering and a 20 pound heavier belly I wish you a happy Monday!
