Airline Etiquette

This article comes from Yahoo! Travel it is what an ex-flight attendant thinks are some helpful airline etiquette tips.

Prepare ahead of time
Prepare for your flight folks! This means includes arriving early and not packing too much.

Don’t pack more than you can lift.
It really bothers me when I see people with these HUGE “carry-on” bags that can barely make it down the aisle. Come on, get rid of that bag and buy one within the airline’s regulations. It will save you and other passengers a lot of hassle.

Help someone who’s struggling with their bags
I would help someone truly in need like an elderly passenger or a parent traveling alone with a child. But if you’re just one of those people that tries to shove your shit into a space that it obviously isn’t going to fit you are not going to get any help from me.

Check before you recline
Reclining has become a hot-button battle. I think some courtesy is warranted here; maybe check to see what the person behind is doing. If they are asleep, recline, if they are working on their laptop maybe you should keep your seat in the upright position. And when food service begins, bring your seat back up so the person behind you can eat without the tray table jabbing him or her in the gut.

Armrest Rules
When you have three seats next to each other, who gets what armrest? To Whitmore, the answer is easy. “The person sitting in the aisle has the luxury of getting up first. The person by the window has the best view.” So, she thinks the person stuck in the middle should have domain over both of the two middle armrests. “Nobody knows that rule,” a surprised Whitmore says. We’re shocked, too.

I LOVE her answer to this! I was stuck in the middle when traveling to Hawaii and the guy in the window seat was hogging the armrest the ENTIRE time! How rude!

Be respectful of those around you
Don’t play your music/video games/movies on your device without headphones. And try not to stink up the entire cabin with food you bring on board.

It’s OK to shoot down a chatty seatmate, but do it politely.

Allow those in front of you to disembark first
This should be an easy one but you would be surprised how many times someone across the aisle or behind me will try and disembark between me and my husband. Hello! We’re together and I’m pretty sure I can walk faster than you!

Hold your tongue
If you encounter a rude passenger, take it up with the flight attendant first.

Be a good parent
This one speaks for itself!

Now that I have wrapped up our most recent trip to Hawaii what do I have to blog about?!
I guess I will do a Travel RoundUp, it’s been a while since I have done one of those.

1 – This video of some Orca whales is AMAZING! It just goes to show you that what was documented in the film Blackfish is correct.

2 – With the merger of American Airlines and US Airways, American Airlines has become the largest airline company. In honor of the several smaller airlines that helped create the company, AA is releasing retro amenities kits! Take a peek!

3 – Have you ever wondered what the true cost of First/Business Class perks? How much did you pay for that seat? And they only spent about $6 on your food?! Check out the details here.

4 – Boeing 787 Dreamliner is nothing but the best!

Dear United, Flyer - Frustrated

So my friends at United Airlines have changed our flights to Hawaii once again...for the 6th time!!! The first few times I think was just 5 mins here 10 mins there but then they changed our flight and it only left us with a 30 minute layover in LA - I wasn't happy with that. So I had them change our flight from Houston to LA to the night before our flight leaves LA to Maui. I was actually sort of excited about this one night stop in LA because now I could try the world famous In-N-Out Burger (they don't have one in Houston yet). Our original flight was supposed to land around 7pm, perfect time for dinner, but now with 2 additional time changes we're now landing at 8pm! Y'all that is SO late for me to eat...looks like I'll be having 2 dinners that night.

When I logged into my account on Friday I was shocked to see all of our flights were red and had a time change. Luckily, they didn't try to move our seats around this time (yeah, they did that too - putting me in Economy when I had paid for Economy Plus but leaving my husband in Plus). I have had to stay on top of these flights like you wouldn't believe!

Air Rage

Recently there have been a lot of diverted planes due to passengers overreacting. One traveler was even arrested for beating up a United Airlines employee at La Guardia airport who asked to see the man’s baggage-claim ticket.

So what makes you tick when you travel? Yahoo Travel talked to several psychologists to find out what really leads to air rage.

Trigger 1: Strangely, all that air travel security makes people feel vulnerable, so they act out.

Trigger 2: People like their space — and there is none on airplanes, so they fight for it.

Trigger 3: Too much to think about stresses us out, which leads to a short fuse.

Trigger 4: When people fly, there’s often drinking or pill taking involved, so they can be more impulsive.

Trigger 5: Lots of people are anxious about flying, so they’re already on edge.

Trigger 6: Others are belligerent and in a bad mood — and it’s contagious.

What makes you tick when traveling?

No More Meals on Shorter First Class Flights

American airlines, along with US Airways, has decided to discontinue full meals on flights less than three hours for first class passengers.

1 hour or Less: Your snack will be packaged
1 to 2 hours: Your snack will come in a basket
Up to 2 hrs 45 mins: Your snack basket will be enhanced with fruit, breads, or sandwiches and other packaged snacks

{Lufthansa Business Class, Paris to Frankfurt}

{United Business Class, Houston to Chicago}
For me, one of the best things about first class is that I get some food prepared on a cute little tray with tiny salt and pepper shakers. Now you’re telling me that I have to fork over all this money for a comfortable seat and I won’t even get a hot meal?!?! WTF?!?! Where is the humanity?! (I’m only half joking here…seriously, you pay A LOT for first class). Luckily, I am a United flyer and don’t have to deal with this…YET.

American is keeping full meals on some of their routes that are frequented by business travelers. Flights to and from Dallas-Fort Worth to Chicago O’Hare, Chicago to New York’s LaGuardia and JFK, and Boston, Denver, Raleigh-Durham, and Washington’s Reagan National.

Kudos to United

I have to say I was really pleased with United's customer service the other day...but maybe it was because I was preparing for the worst in my head.

When we booked our flights for Hawaii I was really excited because we were landing in Maui at 1pm versus the normal 6pm or later. We had a VERY early flight from Houston to LA at 6:15am...but then United changed that flight to 7:30am and that only left us with a 30 minute layover. I wasn't comfortable with that. If our flight from Houston was 10 minutes late we would miss our connection.

So I called United and I was expecting them to give me a hard time because I booked with points and I was expecting to pay a small fee of some sort since I was changing flights even though it wasn't my fault. Unfortunately there wasn't any flights that would get us there around the same time so we decided to fly out the night before and stay a night in LA. I was really happy everything worked out and we didn't have to pay anything for the flight change, especially since it was moved to another day.

Yes, we'll have to pay for an extra night in LA but I'm hoping to cash in some rewards points with the new SPG rewards card we got. And we'll probably hit up Manhattan Beach and In-N-Out Burger (since they don't have those in Houston yet).

Amazing Amenities Kits

When we flew overnight Business Class I expressed my glee over the amenities kits. For some reason I love toiletries in tiny packages. So when I saw this article about AMAZING amenities kits I had to share! Here are some of the best Travel and Leisure found for you… And I took pictures of the kits we got on our flights. See the whole list here

{United Business Class}

{Lufthansa Business Class}
Air New Zealand
The amenity kit in Air New Zealand’s Business Premier Class is a nice blend of luxe and quirky. You get Clarins skin-care products, a pair of fun striped socks and eye masks with cheeky messages such as, “Beware I Sleep Walk” and "Are we there yet?" airnewzealand.com

British Airways
The centerpiece of British Airways amenities bag is a Gladstone-style bag by Sloane Street and filled with eye gel, lip balm and moisturizer by all-natural skin-care maker Ren, and accented with a toothbrush set by D. R. Harris. britishairways.com

Cathay Pacific
On this Hong Kong based airline, men get a dash of Milan style with a bag by Ermenegildo Zegna filled with Acca Kappa toiletries, while ladies receive a clutch by Trussardi stocked with products from Australian brand Aesop. Everyone, meanwhile, can channel some classic Oriental style in the airline’s heather-shaded sleep suits, featuring a traditional mandarin collar, made by Hong Kong designer PYE (coordinate with matching sleep masks and slippers of course). cathaypacific.com

Etihad Airways
The national airline of the United Arab Emirates offers first-class amenity bags so personal that they almost seem like bride-and-groom gifts. Gentlemen are presented with a leather cuff-link box, while ladies get a Swarovski crystal–studded clutch—and both include lotions and toiletries from Swiss-made La Prairie. The flat beds are topped with glossy, dupioni-silk-and-cotton duvets, and you can slip into your cozies in the luxury changing room, which has a full-length mirror. etihad.com

Emirates
The Dubai-based airline was already worthy of the first-class big leagues thanks to its Bulgari amenity bags: Men score aftershave and cologne, and a razor from Taylor of Old Bond Street, based in London, while ladies get Bulgari face lotion, nourishing hand cream and Thé Rouge eau parfumée. But the airline put itself in a different stratosphere with one addition to its double-decker A380 - the plane has an onboard hot shower stocked with fluffy towels. The only hitch? You’re limited to a five-minute soak. emirates.com

Our Business/First Flight Home

Thank you so much for keeping up with our trip to Europe! I took Friday off from blogging because it was a BUSY week and I feel like I have been posting NON STOP about this trip! I have been posting here and on TripAdvisor. I have one more post about it and then I'm done...I promise!

First I want to talk about the airports themselves and security. The security in Frankfurt was pretty intimidating. They don’t talk to you…they just stare at you making you feel like you've done something wrong…but you haven’t so don’t worry! I noticed that people weren't taking their shoes off through security so I asked if I had to (I was wearing boots that were hard to get off). She said no but the minute I walked through they patted me down and made me sit and remove my boots?!?! What the heck! When I did this in Paris I asked the same question and they said yes, you need to remove your boots and even gave me some little booties to put on over my socks so I didn't get them dirty.

This was my second time flying this Frankfurt to Houston route. The first time is was horrible because I was sick and in coach. I have to say that our flight back on United was more enjoyable than the flight to Amsterdam. I can’t really put my finger on it but I think the seats were more comfortable but one thing is for sure, they were less noisy! The Lufthansa seats would make a lot of noise when we moved them into reclining position or a bed. So I heard everyone moving them up and down, up and down all night!

Here are some pictures from our flight home.

{Lufthansa Paris Lounge}

{Food on the plane}

{Amenities kit}

If you collect rewards points from you preferred airline Mike over at IFlyWithMiles.com can hook you for WAY less points then what you can book them for.

Flight to Amsterdam

Hey y’all! I took Monday off because I was tired from the 11 hour flight home and then we had to drive to pick up the pups from my parents.

I bet you’re wondering how our trip was! Well I’m going to take it day by day and maybe have a few breaks in-between for editing and going over some pictures.

I’m going to start this blogging journey with our flight to Amsterdam. We used rewards points so we had a few stops. We started in Houston and flew to Dallas, then went to Frankfurt and then made it to our final destination, Amsterdam.

We flew Lufthansa Business Class and it was nice! I don’t think I can go back to sitting economy for long distance ever again! We had an updated aircraft so everything was new. We enjoyed out preflight cocktails, before dinner drinks, appetizers, main course and dessert. After all that we settled in for some sleep by reclining our seat into a flat bed…oh so nice! My only complaint here was that the seats made a noise when you moved them and even with earplugs I could still hear everyone adjusting their seats.

We woke up and had some breakfast before landing … you sure get a lot of food up in Business and First Class.

We made our way through the passport and security checkpoints and I will say that they were very rude to us as we went through the security checkpoint. Both Matt and I got a pat-down.

We made it to our connecting flight and on board we were given another meal! Their shorter flight business class consisted of a row of three seats but no one sat in the middle seat.

When we landed we had about an hour and a half before our free transfer to the hotel. We opted to take advantage of that instead of wasting money on a taxi, bus or train.

8 Airfare Myths Debunked

Mainstreet.com just came out with a list of 8 Airfare Myths that have been Debunked.  I thought they were interesting and wanted to share.

1. Last Minute Fares
This may be the single biggest myth about the airline industry: hours before a flight airlines will sell tickets for a song.

This myth has become pervasive enough to take over TV shows and even entire ad campaigns, but it's as wrong as it is popular. These days most flights run either full or oversold, and if a few seats remain open, they cost an arm and a leg. Want a good deal in the air? Plan ahead.

I think this might work in Europe, does anybody know? I know for sure it works on cruises.

2. Planning Too Far Ahead
Don't plan too far ahead though, because here's our second myth: you can never buy tickets too far in advance.

As a general rule, tickets get more expensive the closer you get to a flight, so it seems intuitive that earlier is always better. Unfortunately, in this case, intuition will steer you wrong.

The truth is that too far in advance airlines don't have a fix on their prices yet, and they know people booking a year ahead will need that flight no matter what. Airfare moves in a cycle, and the best time to buy is usually a couple months in advance.

This is what I am guilty of!

3. Hidden Fares
Everyone knows someone who considers himself a travel ninja and promises that he knows just where to look to find the best prices online. Well, that's a lie because: there's no such thing as finding just the right site to get amazing, hidden deals.

Save yourself the time. The truth is that all of the airfare booking sites actually get their prices from the same database. You'll find some variation, because different sites will put together slightly different routes, and once in a blue moon that might make a meaningful difference. As a general rule though, rest easy. There's no secret site out there just waiting to cut your ticket price in half.

don't know if I believe this...I do think some people have a knack for finding really good deals.

4. Talking Your Way Into an Upgrade
This myth also comes to us courtesy of pop culture: if you dress nicely and charm the gate agent, you can talk your way right into first class.

Think again, Danny Ocean. Like the myth of last minute fares, charming your way into first class has been effectively killed by a modern, efficient industry. Airlines know those seats up front don't always sell, so they take advantage of the empty space in a dozen other ways. They hand out first class seats as rewards to huge customers or let frequent fliers upgrade with points. Recently, more and more airlines have started offering customers a chance to buy upgrades at check in (in the one exception to our first myth).

The truth is, airlines know how to make the most of every inch of space on their planes, and they do so ruthlessly. I'm not saying getting bumped up at the jetway never happens, but almost always that seat you're trying to schmooze for has already been taken.

I've tried to do this when I've booked through a travel agent...it doesn't work...even when you offer to pay for it.

5. There's a Right Day to Buy
Like all good stories, myth number five starts with a kernel of truth. Price-wise, there are absolutely better days to fly than others. That, however, has led to the myth: it's cheaper to buy your plane ticket on some days than others.

The myth makes might some sense, because airlines do sometimes publish a lot of deals on Tuesdays, but that makes no difference in standard prices. The truth is, day of the week doesn't matter. It's certainly cheaper to fly on a Tuesday vs. a Saturday, but as far as buying the ticket goes, there's just no impact.

I do think fares are cheaper in the middle of the week versus the weekend.

6. Airlines Run Great Online Deals
Speaking of those Tuesday, deals aren't all they're cracked up to be...leading to our sixth myth: you can get reliable savings through online deals.

This myth is a little different from our others, because once upon a time it actually used to be true. In the early days of web browsing, airlines began running online deals to try and get customers used to booking on their websites. Today people overwhelmingly book online, so the industry needs fewer incentives.

The result? Those once useful web fares have been increasingly cut back. The truth behind this myth is that while there are lots of special offers, they are generally so specific and limited as to be functionally useless. Every now and again, your plans might line up with the airline's exacting specifications, but for the most part, they're an advertising gimmick and nothing more.

7. Bereavement
Death of a loved one is one of the few personal reasons to fly last minute these days. This rare need to get on a plane tomorrow at all costs led to the myth of bereavement: airlines will give you a break to fly home for a funeral. The truth is, bereavement exists as a policy, but it has never meant particularly good prices.

As expensive as it is to buy last minute now, it used to be frighteningly more so. Trying to fly cross country on a moment's notice could cost thousands of dollars, so even at half price that ticket still cost a lot of money. Today last minute fares cost much less than they used to (although still considerably more than buying in advance), so the airlines don't need to cut as much of a break. They also have less room to do so, since everyone's ticket runs on razor thin margins.

I didn't even know these existed until a few weeks ago. And American Airlines is the last company to get rid of them.

8. The Saturday Night Stay
This longstanding myth was once a staple of the business community: in order to get the best deals on a round trip flight, you need to stay overnight on a Saturday.

Now, this myth wasn't invented whole cloth. After airline deregulation some companies did start charging more to come back at the end of the week. The rule was aimed at shaking down business travelers who wanted to get home for the weekend and would pay extra to do so. The practice never really took though, and with increasing competition in the marketplace even the companies which did impose the Saturday rule have largely dropped it.

The truth is, although a few companies once did this on some routes, it was never really a major factor in prices to begin with and competition has largely killed it off. Flying back on a Friday or Saturday might sometimes cost more, but only because those are two of the most popular days to fly. Anything else is just a myth.

I've never heard of this one...
